ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming Motherboard
The ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming Motherboard (ROG STRIX X99 GAMING) is the latest addition to ASUS’ ever-expanding line of gaming hardware under their Republic of Gamers brand. As with most ROG products, this motherboard is less suitable for budget builds. However, with improved hardware, networking capabilities and other performance upgrades, the Strix X99 is a sure-fire way to kick-start any enthusiast into the world of high-performance gaming.
The ASUS ROG Strix X99 sports an Intel chipset with an Intel LGA 2011-v3 compatible socket suitable for the latest 6th generation Intel i7 processors. However, unlike other designs, this socket incorporates additional pins when connecting to LGA contacts allowing for higher DDR4 RAM frequencies and improved overclocking stability. The Strix X99 also features two USB 3.1 ports and built-in dual band WIFI and Bluetooth adaptors for standard wireless capabilities. As with most gaming motherboard, the Strix X99 does not fall short on expansion slots and features three PCIe 3.0/ x16 slots, one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot and two PCIe 2.0 x1 slots (supporting SLI and Crossfire technology).
The Strix X99 also features an Intel I218-V Ethernet chip with ROG-exclusive LANGuard technology for improved online performance and lag free gaming. As a competitor to other Ethernet chips such as the Killer E2200, the I218-V boasts faster and smoother gameplay through reduced CPU workload. In combination with LANGuard, the ROG LANGuard Ethernet not only delivers reliable and stable performance but also protects the Strix X99 from static and lighting strikes with surge-protected components and ESD guards. Although Wi-Fi users will not be able to take advantage of this technology, the Strix X99 also supports the 4th generation of ASUS’ GameFirst network optimization software allowing for faster online gaming speeds regardless of the type of connection.
However, perhaps the most unique and important selling point lies in the innovative design of the motherboard itself. With a lot of pressure on companies to produce the best devices, a lot of focus is spent on creating the fastest, smoothest or most efficient hardware with less emphasis on product integrity and long-term survivability. From a financial perspective, planned obsolesce is what allows companies to improve business, albeit at a cost to consumers. However, Strix X99 differs in that it includes built-in self-protection features to create a stronger and long-lasting motherboard. While these safety features are varied, they do encompass critical areas of the motherboard and cover over current protection for ports/RAM, shearing resistance for PCIe slots and corrosion resistant plating and panels.
Aesthetically, the Strix X99 embodies the typical ROG design with a sleek, futuristic look accentuated by RGB LED lighting. LED effects are customizable with Aura lighting control software which features various colour effects such as strobing, color cycle and rainbow. These effects can also sync with other Aura-compatible gear allowing for a unified system that looks just as well as it performs. The Strix X99 also includes a built-in RGB controller for external LED strip lighting, allowing for complete lighting control through one interface.
More and more, we are beginning to see ASUS’ Republic of Gamers branding as a bold symbol amongst gamers, with its unique aesthetic design and vibrant multi-colour lighting. In fact, with the expanding arsenal of ROG products and even full ROG systems available for purchase, it is not surprising to find for many gamers, the ROG brand carries a sense of belonging towards a well-known brand and a dedicated gaming community. The ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming Motherboard embodies all these values through its innovate design and impressive performance. Although more suitable for a high-end gaming build, the Strix X99 will undoubtedly bring any system to the next level.
