MSI GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G Video Card Review

Upgrading your computer to a Pascal architecture GPU has never been easier thanks to the GeForce GTX 1060. With a market price well below that of the GTX 1070 and 1080, the MSI GeForce GAMING X GTX 1060 packs a powerful punch at a relatively low cost. Until the GTX 1050 comes around, the GTX 1060 is a good compromise between financial cost and performance despite its high price in comparison to older models and other budget alternatives.

As a Pascal-powered graphics card, the Gaming X GTX 1060 delivers significant improvements over its predecessor through various changes in manufacturing technology. The Pascal architecture is reported to be as much as ten times faster than Maxwell, resulting in the biggest jump in performance so far through architecture upgrades. As with the GTX 1070 and 1080, all cards of this caliber come equipped with state of the art gaming technologies such as GameWorks, G-Sync, and VR Ready. The GTX 1060 also features new 360-degree image capturing technology designed to supplement the growing market of virtual reality gaming.

However, the MSI GeForce GAMING X GTX 1060 is not just a regular high-end graphics card. As an MSI branded card, the GAMING X GTX 1060 is built with exclusive hardware and software that is hard to find anywhere else. On the hardware side, perhaps one of the most well-known features are MSI’s constantly evolving cooling system technology. In particular, the GAMING X GTX 1060 comes equipped with a TORX 2.0 Fan and Twin Frozr VI which serve to improve air flow and cooling efficiency without increasing noise. MSI cards are capable of dynamically adjusting fan speeds allowing the MSI GAMING X GTX 1060 to reduce sound during idle or light gameplay. Underneath the GTX 1060 lies a modified heatsink, built to improve cooling performance through deflectors that increase heat exchange surface area. The GTX 1060 also comes with a nickel-plated copper base plate designed to enhance heat distribution through integrated 8mm copper heat pipes.

On the outside, the MSI GeForce GAMING X GTX 1060 is visually pleasing through its bold red-black colour scheme, something reflective of the MSI brand. These colours work well together and complement typical computer case and chassis colours including black and white. The overall construction is rather solid, with a metal back plate finished with a matte black coating. Together, the card is not only aesthetically pleasing but is also sturdy and durable. While the card is quite large at approximately 28cm x 14cm x 4cm, all cards of this level are bound to be on the larger end in size. However, this allows the GTX 1060 to deliver impressive performance and to support five outputs including 3 DisplayPorts, 1 DVI-D, and 1 HDMI.

As an MSI branded NVIDIA card, the MSI GeForce GAMING X GTX 1060 comes with excellent support from both companies. On the NVIDIA end, technology such as G-Sync and VR Ready enable the GTX 1060 to deliver extraordinary detail and resolution in both standard and virtual reality gaming. On the other hand, MSI’s Gaming App allows for customization through performance profiles and LED lighting control from a PC or mobile device. The MSI GeForce GAMING X GTX 1060 also supports on-screen speed and temperature display and is compatible with numerous gaming software such as XSplit Gamecaster for streaming, WTFast for networking and MSI Afterburner for overclocking.
